Cadetships

A DISCUSSION PAPER
The overall time frame for a cadetship will be 2 years with an intake of 2 cadets each year building to a maximum of 4 at any one time. E.g. 2 cadets start Jan 1st , 2 more start Jan 1st the following year. By Jan 1st the year after, the first 2 will finish and be replaced by 2 more new cadets.
There will however be a 3 month probationary period on both sides before the cadetship is locked in. If the cadetship is locked in, the 3 months will become part of the overall time (2 years). Notice must be given by both parties 1 month prior (i.e. after 2 months) if there is an intention by either party not to continue with the cadetship.
The first 2 will spend 15 months working the deck in all its facets, at the appropriate time becoming leading Hand and Watchleader, and will spend the final 9 months understudying the Master and 1st Mate as assistant Watchkeepers at sea and general assistant to both when in port. (Courses will be done as appropriate during that timeframe)
The Trust will provide and pay for all training including any academic courses required to fulfil the agreed goals of each cadet. These goals will form part of the originating contract at the beginning, but will be subject to adjustment or change by mutual agreement.
The cadets will live on board as do the normal crew with the trust providing food and board. (It has been estimated that the "on shore” value of the board provided by the ship is equivelant to $300.00 per week per person.)
The Cadets will participate in the "share” system based on the return to the ship of each contract or voyage, currently made available to qualifying members of the crew. Cadets will receive an increase in the number of units paid as appropriate (usually after the first 12 months) and as decided by the Managing Trustee. There will be no payment for the qualifying period in the first 3 months, and all payments will be treated as a separate contract. Each Cadet must have an ABN number to avoid tax being withheld. It must be remembered that, as with the rest of the crew, cadets are on a voluntary basis only, with contract payments, when they occur, a privilege.
After the qualifying period, Cadets must buy a complete kit of Windeward Bound clothing as nominated by the Trust. Clothing will be provided at a much reduced price to assist the Cadets. During the qualifying period, ships clothing will be loaned to the potential cadet by the ship.
In the unlikely event that a cadet may wish to leave prior to the completion of the 2 year contract, the cadet will reimburse the Trust for any costs, course fees etc paid out by the Trust on the Cadets behalf. To this end, a bond of $2,500.00 will be required to be paid prior to the cadetship commencing. This bond will be held in the Trust account and will be payable in full to the cadet on the completion of their 2 year contract. In the event that the Cadet fails to complete their 2 year contract, or fails to complete and pass the courses provided, (or simply fails the course), then the bond will be forfeit.
Cadets will be subject to all and any requirements of the ship in the same way as the rest of the crew. Any and all leave, time off etc will be at the sole discretion of the Ship’s Master. All applications for leave etc must be made at least 3 months in advance to minimise the disruption to the ship and her operations.
